PHC Inc.

History of The Beginnings

Public Housing Communities Inc., developed from the Wyckoff Gardens Association's initiatives that evolved around the HUD regualtion 964, under the family self sufficiency centers. We are commited to helping our neighbors reach their highest potential through existing and generated resources. It all began in the year 2003, Wyckoff Gardens Resident Association, Inc., along with residents and community leaders we developed a needs assessment of the concerns of the people in and around our neighborhood and found that the primary concern was getting and retaining employment. With that we took action by looking at our current partnerships and creating new ones that would help us meet our goals, preparing our participants with training options or obtaining jobs for them. PHC consititutes a network of resident association presidents and others who are responsible for designing and facilitating programs for the promotion of small business opportunities, job referrals, community enrichment, community involvement and self-sufficiency in and around public housing communities. We are also the organiztion that negotiated the Community Benefits Agreement for the Atlantic Yards Project to be developed by Forest City Ratner and Companies. PHC is responsible for the coordination, management and continuous oversight of the Public Housing component of the CBA signed by PHC and the seven other groups on June 27,2005. In this regard the organization will assist residents and associations in operating and utilizing available resources while empowering the community.

A Little About the Executive Director

Charlene Nimmons is the Executive Director of Public Housing Communities Inc. She has lived in the community over 18 years and served in many capacties. Beginning with the New York City Board of Education parent teacher association, where she volunteered as a parent Advisory member. She was elected president and then second vice president on the district level. She also worked for five years for the same system as a child and teacher associate. In transition she began volunteering as the resident association president for Wyckoff Gardens Association. Recognizing the need to be pro-active and being a help to her neighbors. This encouraged her to branch out in the field of job development in the local area she reached out to other community leaders and developers to seek opportunities for the population that she is committed to serve.
